Some Trivia From The 13 IPL Finals So Far

The Indian Premier League (IPL) founded and conducted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) from 2008, is the richest, and most popular  annual professional Twenty20 cricket league in the world. The global audience, as reported by Reuters was a record 269 million viewers for the opening week of the latest edition of the Indian Premier League 2020, that was recently hosted in the UAE . This league played by city-based franchises is usually held in the months of  March and May every year between eight teams representing eight different cities in India. This year however on account of the COVID-19 pandemic the tournament had to be deferred until an appropriate window in October-November and had to be hosted without in-stadium spectators. It also had to be shifted to the UAE for the ease of managing the logistics.

At the end of this 13th edition of the IPL, I thought I will compile a single page at-a-glance Excel sheet giving the details of all the 13 finals that were held in the IPL so far. So here I am sharing some interesting trivia that is associated with the Finals only:





The team with the most wins in the finals is MI with 5 wins

The team with the most appearances in finals is CSK with 8

The Highest Total ever was set in Bengaluru by SRH 208/7 (20 Overs) v/s RCB 200/7 (20 Over) in the 9th IPL-2016

Highest Total achieved chasing was in Bengaluru by KKR 200/7 (19.3 Overs) v/s KXIP 199/4 (20 Overs) in the 7th IPL-2014

Lowest Total ever defended was in Hyderabad by MI 129/8 (20 Overs) v/s RPS 128/6 (20 Overs)  in the 10th IPL-2017

Lowest Total ever scored by any team in 20 overs of a final was in Hyderabad by RPS 128/6 (20 Overs) v/s MI 129/8 (20 Overs) in the 10th IPL-2017

Most total runs scored in a Finals is 408 runs set in Bengaluru by SRH 208/7 (20 Overs) v/s RCB 200/7 (20 Over) in the 9th IPL-2016

Least total runs scored in a Finals is 257 runs set in Hyderabad by MI 129/8 (20 Overs) v/s RPS 128/6 (20 Over) in the 10th IPL-2017

Highest margin of victory by wickets was a win by 8 wkts in Mumbai by CSK 181/2 (20 Overs) v/s SRH in the 11th IPL-2018

Highest margin of victory by runs was a win by 58 runs in Chennai by CSK 205/5 (20 Overs) v/s RCB 147/8 (20 Overs) in the 4th IPL-2011

Lowest margin of victory was a win by 1 run. It was achieved two times, both in Hyderabad, and both times by MI.

The first time was with a score of 129/8 (20 Overs) v/s RPS 128/6 (20 Overs) in the 10th IPL-2017 and the second with a score 149/8 (20 Overs) v/s CSK 148/7 (20 Overs) in the 12th IPL-2019

The maximum number of teams that ever competed in an IPL tournament was 10 teams in the 4th IPL-2011

Team with most Man Of  The Match Awards in the finals is MI with 5 so far

Anil Kumble of RCB is the only Man Of The Match from a losing team in the finals for his bowling performance 4-0-16-4 against Deccan Chargers in 2nd IPL-2009

Most successful captain is Rohit Sharma of MI with 5 wins in 5 appearances

The Captian with the most number of appearances in the finals is MS Dhoni of CSK with 8 appearances

The team that won the toss has won 9 times out of 13

The team that won the toss and chose to field first has won only 3 times

The team batting first has won 8 times

Only 2 out of the 13 Finals were held overseas

The 13th IPL edition of 2020 is the 1st tournament without spectators

Finally in its 13-year history so far the month of May hosted the most 9 finals, followed by 2 in June and 1 each in April and November. The 13th final in Dubai on 10th November 2020 is the only time an IPL Final was ever held at the onset of winter.

Congratulations to the talented Mumbai Indians team for their spectacular dominance in the 13th edition of the IPL, they were undoubtedly the best team this year!
