Fernweh

Fernweh: Wanderlust Answered!

There is a German word, Fernweh, for a feeling that has always seemed to live somewhere deep within me: a longing for distant places, for horizons not yet touched, cultures not yet understood, flavours not yet tasted and roads whose names have not yet found their way into my memories.

For me, Fernweh is no longer simply the desire to travel. It is an ache for the unfinished map of my life.

There are still countries whose immigration stamps are absent from my passport. Australia and Austria wait somewhere beyond the familiar. Brazil calls with the rhythm of samba; Argentina with the romance of Buenos Aires and the vastness of Patagonia. Kenya waits with the wild silence of a safari, while Scotland beckons with its whisky trails, mist-covered Highlands and ancient castles.

There is a Great Wall in China still to be walked, its stones carrying centuries beneath my feet. There is Moscow, and the Kremlin standing in the pages of history. There are French vineyards where perhaps an afternoon could dissolve into sunlight, wine and conversation. And somewhere across America, Route 66 still stretches like an invitation to abandon schedules and simply drive into the horizon.

But perhaps what I yearn for most is not the landmark itself.

It is the feeling of arriving.

Of stepping into an unfamiliar street and realising that the world is much larger than the life one has known. Of sitting at a table where the food is strange, hearing a language I cannot understand, watching people live according to rhythms shaped by histories completely different from mine, and feeling, for a fleeting moment, that I have become a little less certain and a little more alive.

Perhaps that is my Fernweh: the unfinished conversation between my feet and the world.

And somewhere within me remains the quiet, stubborn hope that there are still enough journeys left in this life to turn this yearning into memories, and this map of dreams into a map of places I have actually lived.
